Self-portrait was launched by Han Chong in November 2013. Educated at Central Saint Martin’s in London, the Malaysian-born designer’s extraordinary talent has been showcased not just in the world of fashion but also visual art events such as the Venice Biennale in 2009 and the Munich Art Festival in 2013.
Combining tone and experimental textures, Chong designs garments with a refined femininity. In tune the realities of the modern lifestyle, function and utility also play a key role in his designs, taking the self-portrait girl from work-to-play with ease and confidence.
In 5 short years, self-portrait has been worn by some of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment including Kate Middleton, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kendall Jenner, Michelle Obama, Beyonce, Madonna, Kristen Stewart, Kerry Washington, Meghan Markle, Reese Witherspoon, Christy Teigen, Jaime Chung, Olivia Munn, Marion Cotillard, Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn, Olivia Palermo, Aimee Song and Chiara Ferragni.
As of 2018, self-portrait has 375 wholesale clients covering 70 countries worldwide. The brand’s e-commerce website,, ships globally, attracting an average of 40,000 unique visitors on a weekly basis.
Showing at New York Fashion Week twice a year, self-portrait has become a recognizable label on the fashion calendar. In October 2016, self-portrait was announced as a finalist for the Best Emerging Designers at the British Fashion Awards.
Following the successful collaborations in the accessory category with Les Specs and Robert Clergerie, self-portrait launched their own range of shoes and scarves on the Spring Summer 2018 NYFW runway. Autumn Winter 2018 saw the expansion of the brand’s accessory range to include sunglasses and bags. In September 2018, self-portrait announced the launch of a new category, swimwear, forming part of the next Spring Summer collection.
Self-portrait’s flagship store on 49 Albemarle Street, London opened in March 2018.
